He has a wealth of knowledge on the new Unitary Patent and UPC and authors in Tilmann / Plassmann, Unified Patent Protection in Europe (Oxford University Press).
JUVE, the leading German directory, has been listing Steffen for many years as "highly recommended" for patent litigation and in its 2019 /2020 edition quotes competitors describing him as a "technically very well versed litigator". In 2023 he was named a World Intellectual Property Review Leader. Legal 500 2021 lists him as one of only few “leading names” of patent litigators for Germany. Wirtschaftswoche listed him in 2017 as one of only 20 German lawyers for the "first league of patents in Germany".
Steffen heads our Munich patent litigation group. He also supervises Hogan Lovells Responsible Business activities for Continental Europe. He studied law in Regensburg (Germany) and Paris (France). He received a Master's degree from the University of Oxford (UK) in 1999 and a Ph.D. in the area of international procedural law in Germany in 2002.
