The Labour Relations Act (LRA) amendments will be effective from 1 January 2015. This is one of the legislative instruments in the list of employment legislation amendments to come into effect. The Basic Conditions of Employment Act amendments came into effect on 1 September 2014 and the Employment Equity Act amendments came into effect on 1 August 2014. The commencement date of the Employment Services Act is yet to be proclaimed.

The amendments to the LRA will impact temporary employment services, employees employed on fixed term employment contracts and part-time employees. The amendments also provide additional protection to employees in these categories who earn an amount equal to or less than the earnings threshold (currently R205 433.30 per annum).

The amendments relating to temporary employment service employees who provide services to a client and the fixed term contract employees employed prior to the commencement of the amendments will only apply three months after the commencement of the amendments on 1 January 2015.
