UK election results - a view from the Hogan Lovells Privacy and Cybersecurity practice

Press releases | 05 July 2024

Eduardo Ustaran, Global Co-Head of the Hogan Lovells Privacy and Cybersecurity practice, commented on the implications of the UK Elections for privacy, data protection and AI regulation:

“The new UK Government should aim to realise the opportunity to place the UK as a global leader in these areas. The UK is in an ideal sweet spot because it is close enough to the EU’s policy objectives of providing the highest levels of protection for personal data and human rights in the face of today’s AI revolution, but also understands the crucial importance of technological innovation for growth and prosperity. That combination is particularly attractive for responsible global businesses to model their regulatory compliance strategies for privacy, cybersecurity and AI. This is a crucial issue for the UK Government to get right and support its primary goal of growing the economy. A key factor is to what extent the “Brussels effect” will apply to the UK and whether the new EU AI Act, set for official release next Friday, will influence the UK's AI regulation, even if the Government wishes to adopt a less onerous approach.”
