Hogan Lovells' Los Angeles office honored with prestigious OneJustice "Champion of Justice" award
Los Angeles, 2 July 2024 – The Hogan Lovells Los Angeles office has been selected by legal services non-profit OneJustice as the 2024 recipient of its “Champion of Justice” award.
This honor celebrates our commitment to providing life-changing legal aid to those in need, illustrated by our partnership with the Inner City Law Center (ICLC) in Los Angeles. Michael Turrill, a litigation partner in our LA office, serves on the ICLC Board of Directors. Michael Maddigan Office Managing Partner of our Los Angeles office, previously held the role. They and other colleagues in the Los Angeles office have made a significant impact in representing low-income tenants facing severe housing issues.
In one case, we represented clients living in an illegal unit plagued by water leaks, mold, and infestations. Despite the clients' repeated requests for repairs, the landlord rebuffed them and subjected them to harassment. We filed a civil lawsuit in the Los Angeles Superior Court and helped our clients relocate to a safer environment while pursuing their claim for damages.
In another matter, they defended a client against unlawful eviction attempts and a hostile living environment. The landlord filed an unlawful detainer action and a false civil lawsuit accusing our client of property damage. With the support of ICLC and our Hogan Lovells team, we are filing an amended answer to assert appropriate defenses and a counter-claim for housing violations.
Both cases were led by Michael Turrill with support from Los Angeles associates Jay Ettinger, Stephanie Sandoval, Jacobo Rueda, Rachel Moon, and Rupinder Garcha.
