As a lawyer, Markus mainly advises institutional investors, national and international investors, banks and family offices on real estate transactions, especially complex project developments. He also focuses on advising on commercial (esp. office and luxury retail) and private tenancy law, private construction law as well as property law.
Markus was appointed as a notary in 2018 and has since then specialised in the notarisation of real estate law and corporate law contracts.
His clients appreciate his pragmatic and solution-oriented approach, especially in complex negotiation situations. Due to his work as a lawyer and notary, he also has an excellent overview of the respective applicable market standards in Germany. According to WirtschaftsWoche (no. 04/2021 and 2022), he is one of the most renowned and highly recommended lawyers for real estate law in Germany.
Markus leads the Hogan Lovells Real Estate Academy at our Frankfurt office, where he regularly holds lectures on real estate law. He is also a lecturer in private construction law at the EBS Executive School of the EBS University of Economics and Law.
Markus Franken is a member of the Urban Land Institute.
After his studies in Trier, Markus Franken obtained an LL.M. in Commercial Law at the University of Auckland (New Zealand). Before joining us, he worked during his traineeship at leading international law firms in the areas of real estate law, tax law and finance law.

Advising IVG Institutional Funds GmbH on the acquisition of "Ericus-Contor" in Hamburg.
Advising Italian luxury retailer in management of existing and negotiation of new commercial lease agreements.
Advising a Luxembourg special fund managed by IVG on the sale of the "Hackesches Quartier Berlin".
Advising a Luxembourg special fund managed by IVG on the acquisition of the Prime portfolio (project development One Goetheplaza/T11 and K195, by way of a share deal).
Advising ICredpartner S.à r.l. & Saphir S.E.C.S. and ICredpartner S.à r.l. & Cie SECS (two funds managed by UBS) in negotiating property purchase agreements and commercial lease agreements.
Advising the seller consortium on the sale of the Christie real estate portfolio by way of sale of all shares in W2005 Christie B.V. and its German subsidiaries.
