State of Play: Connected Vehicles and Unlicensed Technologies in the 5.9 GHz Band

Partner Ari Fitzgerald spoke on the panel "State of Play: Connected Vehicles and Unlicensed Technologies in the 5.9 GHz Band" at the Federal Communications Bar Association's CLE seminar Securing Spectrum: Unlicensed Technologies, Connected Vehicles, and Privacy.

Access to spectrum is necessary for connected vehicle communications and for innovative unlicensed uses. The FCC has committed to complete testing of potential 5.9 GHz spectrum sharing technologies by January 15, 2017. The NHTSA has proposed to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication technology on all new light-duty vehicles. Will commercial applications, such as wireless LTE and new radar technologies, improve highway safety as well as, or in place of, DSRC infrastructure? How should applications that are not safety-of-life be defined and addressed?
